About Webpanda
Webpanda was started in December 2009 as a reaction to the weaponized AJAX, creepy ads, and binding ToS of the Facebook, as well as to the annoying PR attempts by Myspace. It is fully free (as in beer), as opposed to LiveJournal.
There's been some question as to the purpose of this site. Webpanda.net is not an attempt to revive 2004 or Metajournal. It is about a virtual community developed with more foresight and care than other sites. Many lessons have been learned (and apparently forgotten or ignored) by major social networks online; this site attempts to pay heed to those lessons, and develop something that actually creates a sense of community without taking over your daily routine. How many times do you check facebook every day? How much closer do you feel to people now that you 'like' their status instead of actually conversing with them about their lives?
I just realized that what we had on MJ in '04 was better than what we have today; my needs as a user are not met by Facebook, Myspace, or Livejournal. This is an attempt at what I would like to see on the internet.
Please note:
- Webpanda is in open alpha testing as of 06 January 2010.
- This is a one-man pet project. The site owner is friendly and open to suggestions, but calls all the shots.
- This site was inspired by Metajournal, but it not the same. Some features are gone, some have been added. Feel free to comment or make suggestions.
- If you were on MJ before it went under, your account has been lost. Your blog may be available here, but may be lost as well. I can help you import your old blog onto this site, but will not guarantee anything.
- Webpanda, unlike Metajournal, is a closed project; site code can only be access by directly contacting the site owner.
In Memoriam
Joe DiMichele (asciifish) was the premier troll on MetaJournal; despite his , his spirit was good. He took over MJ after the initial developer (here as pcwalton). Joe died in early 2009; I, for one, missed him ever since we parted ways hope that he's having fun at the big VNV Nation concert in the sky. Wherever he ended up, you can be sure he'll take it over.
